My Stroll Around Town
Pictures taken on June 27/2018, during my second visit to the Dominican Republic.
In the pictures above, I decided to wander around town and take some pictures. Some tourists don’t like to wander around town but I encourage them to do it. Most of them like to stay on the resorts or hotels and go to the private beaches next to the resorts. Even though I encourage other tourists to go out and walk around town, its not for everyone… so I don’t blame them.
Here is why…
The Dominican Republic is still a third world country even though it’s had a lot of growth over the years (largest economy in the Caribbean), some of the locals in tourists towns like Sosua tend to ask tourists walking on the streets for money. I would say… I was asked for “dinero” (money) at least 2 times a week. Simply decline and say “no gracias”.
Other annoyances are people on the streets selling you things, all kinds of things – from necklaces to viagra. Again, simply decline and politely say no gracias and they will leave you alone. Anyway, please understand that they are simply trying to scratch out a living, don’t take look at it in a bad way and don’t let these minor annoyances kept you hostage on resorts, hotels or in your Airbnb.
Another concern is safety – yes, Sosua is safe. Just be more cautious because you are in a foreign land.
Do I still recommend you walk around town?
YES!! I did and absolutely loved it, took in all the sights. But I suggest you only walk around the tourist areas of EL Batey and if you want to go Sosua‘s neighborhoods where the locals live like Charamicos, Maranatha, etc… either speak fluent Spanish or have a local guide with you.
